According to the United States Department of Agriculture, Pakistan is the 7th largest producer of sugar in the world amounting to 3.4% of total global output and the 8th largest consumer of sugar amounting to 2.9% of global consumption. A favorable climate, fertile soil, abundant water availability and government policies providing price protection to farmers that produce sugar cane has ensured an ample supply of the raw material to local millers who number 81 and are spread throughout the agricultural belt that encompasses three of the four provinces that make up the country.

According to estimates, Pakistan is the 7th largest producer of molasses in the world aided primarily by the country’s strong footprint in sugar cane production. A favorable climate, fertile soil, abundant water availability and government policies providing price protection to farmers that produce sugar cane has ensured an ample supply of sugar cane which when processed to produce sugar accrues a certain content of molasses as a by-product. This by product, however, is used extensively by local distilleries as the main raw material to produce bio-fuel (ethanol) in addition to many applications towards food processing and industrial usage.
